Tailadhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy where warm medicated oil (Taila) is continuously poured over the forehead (Shiro Tailadhara) or the entire body (Sarvanga Tailadhara). This therapy is a variation of Shirodhara, using specially prepared herbal oils to deeply nourish the nervous system, promote relaxation, and restore overall well-being.

The word ‘Tailadhara’ comes from Sanskrit:
  • Taila = Oil
  • Dhara = Continuous stream or flow
This therapy is particularly beneficial for individuals with Vata and Pitta dosha imbalances, as it helps in grounding the body, improving circulation, and relieving stress-related disorders. Tailadhara is widely used for neurological, psychological, and stress-related ailments in Ayurvedic healing.

Step 2: Positioning the Patient

  • The person lies down on a comfortable therapy table with their head slightly tilted back.

  • The flow is maintained for 30 to 60 minutes.
  • The therapy can be done as:
    1. Shiro Tailadhara – Focuses on the forehead for mental relaxation and neurological health.
    2. Sarvanga Tailadhara – Covers the whole body for pain relief and rejuvenation.

Step 4: Gentle Massage (Optional)

  • A gentle head and scalp massage may be performed to improve absorption and relaxation.

Step 5: Rest and Herbal Tea

  • The person is allowed to rest for 15-20 minutes.
